First, the type of coolants, there are two main types of coolant, Type A and Type B. Second, you must find out what the base of the coolant is. First, you have to find what type of coolant you need. When it comes to selecting a coolant, there are two things which you should take into account. Not too expensive, especially aftermarket. What are the different types of coolant? What is a coolant inhibitor? Posted 09:14 (#5209341 - in reply to #5207915) Subject: RE: Cat 3306 coolant in oil after sittingįixed my 3306 in a D6 by replacing the oil cooler on the engine. The pressure test will show you exactly where it is coming from. But definitely could be liner O-rings or water pump too. My first choice is the oil cooler because the tubes are thin and can corrode over time.

Pull the oil pan off and fill the cooling system with water and pressurize it and look to see where the water is coming from. Just our farm experience, tractor may be a little different. Reason being is oil psi is always greater than water psi. NOW, if the motor was running you would get oil in the water. If its been setting and water gets in the oil pan, oil cooler is the first thing to check. Water pump will do that if the weep hole is plugged with dirt. You could remove the oil pan and pressurize the radiator, if the liner o-rings are leaking you'll be able to see drips around the liner. I would say your probably right on the liner o-rings. Is this a common failure? Is there any chance that it will work for a few hours if the operator takes extra care?Īs always, thanks in advance to the NAT brain trust! I have not heard of this happening before.

He did call the most interested buyer and tell him what was going on, so rest assured that he is not the type to sell the tractor without either a full repair, or an appropriate discount so that the buyer is comfortable with the risk. My first thought was to do an oil change, fill the rad up with water, and run it long enough to get up to temp to see if the o-rings soften up enough to seal again. I am assuming that the o-rings around the sleeves have dried out. Now the tractor has not run for some time, and it had been fine, so we are assuming that it is not a sudden appearance of a head gasket failure. Perhaps a bit nervous, he decided to drain a bit from the pan, and coolant came out first. His found a puddle under the rad, so he thought that maybe someone had been there and checked for coolant by draining the rad, and the petcock didn't shut off. He went to start it up this week to try and sell it, and there was no coolant in the rad. He hasn't been farming himself, so the tractor has basically been stored for 5 years or so, just running a few times a year, usually just enough to move it around.
